It’s Mueller time

Special counsel Robert Mueller is testifying on Capitol Hill right now. So far, he’s confirmed his report did not exonerate Trump in his investigation. He also said this morning the “Russian government interfered in our election in sweeping and systematic fashion.” It’s unlikely anything new will come of today’s testimony but it keeps the president’s corruption in the news. We’ll bring you the Texas angle on this story.

Beto takes on race in schools

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidates are in Detroit this morning for a forum sponsored by the NAACP. Ahead of the forum, the Beto O’Rourke campaign issued a statement this morning on white and non-white schools districts.

“Sixty-five years after Brown v. Board of Education, and America’s schools still remain segregated,” O’Rourke said. “The effects of a system where students of color are disciplined at alarmingly higher rates than white students, where funding favors white school districts over nonwhite districts, or where white teachers far outnumber black teachers live on well beyond students leaving the classroom. We must be relentless in our fight for equity and full opportunity in our schools, our education system, and across society.”

Houston’s mayor on the Democratic debate

Readers of The Signal know we’re focused on Texas’ role as a swing state in the 2020 elections. Recently, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke to the Democratic National Committee’s decision to bring a debate to Texas.

“This is one of those times when Texas is not being written off by anybody,” Turner said. “Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat or an independent, you’re going to be keenly interested in what’s taking place here at Texas Southern on September 12 and 13, and that’s for the first time in a long time.”

We’ll keep saying this until we’re blue in the face: Trump, underwater in the polls in Texas, helps put the state in play.

Trump’s Republican Party

Set aside for a moment the bad behavior of Trump and his Republican Party. That’s been covered ad nauseam. And forget, too, the progressive worldview. What about the GOP’s objective effectiveness, their basic competence, both nationally and in Texas? Our story just posted.
