President Trump is visiting El Paso on Wednesday in the wake of the mass murder that killed 22 people. Ahead of the trip, Trump lambasted former El Paso congressman and 2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, ridiculing his first name and telling him to “be quiet.”
“Beto (phony name to indicate Hispanic heritage) O’Rourke, who is embarrassed by my last visit to the Great State of Texas, where I trounced him, and is now even more embarrassed by polling at 1% in the Democrat Primary, should respect the victims & law enforcement – & be quiet!”
O’Rourke responded on Twitter. “22 people in my hometown are dead after an act of terror inspired by your racism. El Paso will not be quiet and neither will I.”
The former El Paso congressman, who opposed Trump’s trip to his city given the president’s anti-immigrant and racist statements and policies, is attending an #ElPasoStrong community event “to honor lives lost and stand up against racism and white supremacy while President Trump comes to El Paso.”
The two held dueling events in El Paso in February.
The white lone wolf shooter left a manifesto blaming the “Hispanic invasion of Texas” for his rampage.
Politico reported Tuesday the Trump Administration has quietly expanded access to guns.
